I'm here via Reddit... this is a great post. I'm a writer and a volunteer firefighter, and the end of Cool Runnings makes me cry, so this post basically ticks every box I have (solid, clever writing, underdog story, elevation of cheerful reason above all, an interesting perspective) and so of course it made me cry (sports-movie style, not... end of Armageddon) I'm really looking forward to more from you. Bravo!

The bias you’re trying to fight against is so strong that I think you might have accidentally partially succumbed to it without noticing in the last section where you talk about his to fight it. Your chosen example of a non disaster is spilling something but then quickly cleaning it up. In fact, you found your example by searching for “spill” in the news. But of course, this is celebrating the success of the last line of defense. In an ideal world, there would have been no spill, and hence no news story for you to find. So any unsung heroes who figure out a way to prevent the spill from happening in the first place will indeed be unsung. Nobody will ever know they made a difference. Even they themselves will not know for sure. I don’t know how to fix this; it might be a hard problem. We can still start with the “succeed story” idea you mentioned. It’s still a step in the right direction.
